Beautiful Invasion

Lupine blooms along the coast near the Vestrahorn mountains along the Southern coast of Iceland, where mountains rise abruptly from the sea and the wind is rarely still. Shooting here is always a small negotiation with motion: constant coastal gusts pushing through the flowers and making stillness hard to come by.

Lupine isn’t native to Iceland. It was introduced decades ago and to say that it has spread widely would be an understatement, thanks to how well it thrives in the open terrain and volcanic soils. Whatever its complicated ecological role, the visual impact is undeniable. Dense clusters of purple flowers ripple across the foreground while the jagged peaks of Vestrahorn loom behind, partially veiled by a wispy passing cloud. The scene feels both delicate and rugged, shaped equally by wind, water, and time.
