• Black-and-white abstract photograph of eroded clay formations near Factory Butte in central Utah, showing repeating ridges and intersecting erosion lines.

Goodland

Near Factory Butte in central Utah, most attention goes upward, toward massive mudstone walls and distant buttes that dominate the skyline. It’s easy to miss what’s happening right under your feet.

This photo focuses on the badlands themselves: compacted clay folded into ridges, seams, and shallow channels shaped by short bursts of water and long stretches of exposure. The repeating forms look almost intentional, but every line is the result of slow erosion and collapse. Step back far enough and the patterns start to dissolve, giving way to something more chaotic and less predictable.
