Patience is Golden

This photograph was made in a high basin deep in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado near the end of a week of repeatedly dashed hopes. A large wildfire burning upwind filled the region with thick haze, muting light and obscuring the sun for days at a time. Most evenings ended early, with nowhere to go but back to camp.

Then, just before my time there drew to a close, a small storm system moved through and finally started clearing the air. The change was immediate. Color returned to the sky, and fields of wildflowers—dense, vibrant, and stretching in every direction—caught the last warm light of the day. I stayed well past sunset, watching the glow fade from gold to blue, grateful for a brief window that made the wait worthwhile.
