• Abstract aerial photograph of a dry lake bed in California’s Owens Valley, showing mineral and salt deposits forming branching red, brown, and white patterns.

Rust

This abstract photograph was made from the air over a dry lake bed in California’s Owens Valley, looking straight down at the surface below. From this vantage point, the landscape dissolves into color and texture: pale ground broken by branching bands of rust, charcoal, and cream.

These markings are the remnants of water long gone - mineral deposits and salts left behind as the lake evaporated, shaped by slow processes rather than dramatic events. Seen from above, the surface feels less geological and more gestural, like an ink wash spreading across paper. The Eastern Sierra Nevada rises nearby, but here its influence is quiet, present only in the subtle chemistry written into the ground.
