The Great Northern Beacon

This photograph was made along the southern coast of Iceland beneath the jagged silhouette of Eystrahorn on the night I first truly witnessed the northern lights. Earlier that day, I’d noticed a small reflecting tarn and returned after dark, cooking dinner and waiting as twilight faded and stars began to emerge.

Then, without warning, the sky ignited. A vivid green arc of aurora stretched above the mountains, pulsing and dancing and shimmering. I ran for the tarn, wading straight into the icy water to reach the one spot where the reflection aligned just right. For more than an hour, soaked and still, I watched the lights ripple and shine overhead. That night marked the beginning of a lasting obsession, one that turned curiosity into a lifelong pursuit of the aurora.
