The Unturned Stone
This photograph was made on the Racetrack Playa, home to the long-mysterious “sailing stones.” For decades, no one knew for sure how these rocks moved across the dry lakebed, leaving behind delicate tracks etched into the cracked desert surface.
It turns out the explanation is subtle rather than magical: rare rain events create shallow standing water, thin sheets of ice form overnight, and strong winds slowly push the stones across the playa. In this moment, a single rock rests beneath the Milky Way, its faint trail pointing toward distant mountains and the glowing core of the galaxy above. The scene ties together deep time and fleeting motion - geologic patience under an ever-moving night sky.
