Winter's Still Chill

This photograph was made during winter in the Eagle River area just outside Anchorage. In summer, this landscape is alive with spawning salmon and the grizzlies that follow them. In winter, it becomes something else entirely - still, empty, and hushed.

I sat alone on the frozen river beneath a sky dense with stars, listening to nothing but my own breathing as each exhale drifted into the air and crystallized against the cold. Time felt suspended. When I finally stood up, I realized just how long I’d been there: my clothing had begun to freeze lightly to the ice beneath me. Above, the Milky Way arched faintly between the snow-covered peaks of the Chugach Range, mirrored in a smooth patch of ice - a quiet convergence of cold, silence, and scale.
