• Thin ice crystals forming patterns along the shoreline of a fjord in Lofoten, Norway, with snow-dusted jagged mountains rising across dark water under cold winter light.

Blue Ice

This photograph was made in early February in a remote fjord at the far end of Norway's Lofoten. Winter here usually means deep snow and locked ice, but an unseasonably mild stretch brought rain, mud, and bare ground instead. The season felt strangely absent.

This thin patch of ice was the exception. Fragile crystals spread across a shallow pool, catching faint blue light and forming intricate, fleeting patterns. It was the only clear signal that winter still had a foothold. Across the fjord, steep peaks rise in sharp relief - rock shaped by glaciers and time - looming solid and permanent against a foreground that would vanish within hours.
