• Long-exposure coastal photograph near Klamath, California, showing waves breaking against rocky shoreline and sea stacks glowing in warm evening light.

Crashing

When people think of Redwood National and State Parks, they usually picture towering trees - but the nearby coastline is just as dramatic. This photograph was made along the rugged Pacific shore near Klamath, where waves collide with dark volcanic rock and sea stacks rise abruptly from the water.

I set up low and close to the surf, using a longer exposure to let the motion of the waves streak across the foreground as they surged and recoiled. The timing mattered: warm evening light filtered through thin clouds just as the tide pushed in, turning each breaking wave into a brief, luminous burst before it dissolved back into the sea. It’s a reminder that this coastline has its own wild personality, distinct from - but inseparable from - the forests just inland.
