Sunrise at Iceland's Fagradalsfjall volcano was a raw reminder of the fleeting impermanence of our world, even of what was once solid, unchanging stone. I hiked in for hours through the dark across a barren, geothermal plain - no trail, no landmarks, just rock and steam - skirting fresh lava fields still hot enough to breathe.

When the sun finally broke the horizon, a heavy cloud bank rolled in at the same time the eruption’s smoke and heat began to thicken the air. The landscape turned copper and ember-toned, with fog and smoldering vapor sliding through the valleys. Off in the distance, lava fountains pulsed bright orange, throwing molten rock into the sky with the casual force of a geyser. It was a beautiful reminder of the sheer raw power of the earth.
