• Black sand beach on Iceland’s southern coast at Eystrahorn, with waves flowing through dark volcanic rock toward jagged mountains lit by warm early light.

Great Horns of the North

Along the southern coast of Iceland, Eystrahorn rises sharply from a black sand shoreline shaped by constant motion. Waves from the North Atlantic surge in and drain back out through narrow channels in the volcanic rock, leaving the beach in a state of near-continuous change.

The air here is rarely still. Wind carries the sound of dozens of gulls overhead, while a red lighthouse punctuates the low ground of the peninsula nearby, offering a rare note of color against stone, water, and sky. At sunset, warm light briefly settles on the jagged peaks, softening their edges before the next tide reshapes the foreground once again.
