Silent Thunder

This photograph was made at a multi-tiered waterfall deep in the Kootenay Plains, far from the crowds that gather elsewhere in the Canadian Rockies. It was the height of autumn, though only a single yellow larch near the top of the upper falls hints at the season. While much of the range was buried under cloud, this remote basin remained clear enough for the aurora to emerge overhead.

Soft curtains of green and violet light shimmered above the canyon as the waterfall thundered below. Despite the serene appearance of the image, the flow was immense - powerful enough that the ground trembled beneath my feet even from a distance. The contrast between the raging water and the quiet glow of the night sky made the moment feel both grounding and otherworldly.
