Out of This Swirled

This photograph was made near Atigun Pass in the far north of Alaska as a vivid auroral spiral suddenly blossomed across the Arctic sky. I was standing waist-deep in soft powder snow, surrounded by darkness and silence, when the northern lights intensified and began to twist overhead.

What started as a faint glow quickly transformed into a luminous green swirl, folding in on itself and expanding outward like a living thing. The motion was fast and fluid, constantly reshaping the sky above the frozen mountains. In moments like this, the cold disappears entirely - attention narrowed to nothing but light, movement, and the immense scale of the Arctic night.
