Cosmic Eddies

This photograph was made in Sweden's Abisko National Park, far above the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland. After a full week in northern Norway without a single clear night, I crossed the border into Sweden chasing a forecast that hinted at stronger aurora activity, even though clouds still dominated the sky. I kept driving well after dark across a vast, open winter landscape, waiting for any sign of a break.

Eventually the clouds thinned, stars appeared, and faint green arcs began to swirl overhead. Then, during a powerful auroral substorm, the sky erupted. Shimmering ribbons of light stretched from horizon to horizon, twisting into luminous eddies that filled the entire dome of night. It was the largest and most intense aurora display I had yet witnessed; an unforgettable reminder that awe and magic still exist.
