This photograph was made deep within Alaska's far north, on the outskirts of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) during the heart of winter, in a place rarely seen and difficult to reach. Access here is slow and deliberate, and conditions are often unforgiving - on this day, temperatures just to the north hovered near −33°F.

Wind-sculpted snow drifts lead the eye toward solitary peaks beneath a star-filled sky as twilight fades and faint curtains of aurora rise and fall overhead. The landscape is stripped to its essentials: snow, stone, sky, and light. There is no shelter, no sound, and no margin for error - only vast space and intense cold. The result is a study in isolation and scale, capturing a moment of quiet beauty in one of the most remote wilderness areas in North America.
