• Snow-buried spruce trees sculpted by arctic wind at sunset in northern Alaska, with blowing ice crystals and warm light.

Subzero

Spruce trees stand entombed beneath sculpted drifts of wind-packed snow in the far north of Alaska, not far from the road that eventually leads to the Arctic Ocean. Shot at sunset in sub-zero temperatures, this scene captures the moment when low light and airborne snow crystals turn the frozen landscape luminous. Arctic winds whipped loose ice through the air, stinging exposed skin and reshaping the drifts in real time. Despite the severity of the conditions, the sinking sun briefly softened the scene, casting warm light across a landscape defined by cold, motion, and endurance.
